  17. <p>     German leader Helmut Kohl, whose popularity has plunged as
  18. his countrymen have become aware of just how much unification
  19. is going to cost, is losing his patience. Walking through the
  20. shabby central square in the town of Halle earlier this month,
  21. Kohl caught the people's disaffection right in the face. Irate
  22. citizens pelted him with eggs while shouting, "Liar! Liar!" The
  23. enraged Kohl, egg yolks dripping from his head and lapels, shook
  24. off security personnel and plunged into the crowd to confront
  25. the hecklers. Just as the burly Bundeskanzler was taking a
  26. swing, his guards dragged him away.
